Great

Kinda like puzzle quest but without boring dialogs and in cool 8bit style. Also there is some bug when playing on iPad mini - screen cropped on left and right side - please fix it.

Close to greatness

This game does a lot right but leaves some things unpolished. The game needs to turn for one. But it leaves much unsaid. Like that each hero goes up in price. Or that I can review my chat log. With that said the game runs well. It keeps its fun after a few plays and rewards the player well. At first I was worried that I would be forced to do missions for stars, but you are guaranteed one per boss. Also with a new update you can use the gold you earn on a run to change missions should you not like one.

Great game with no IAP but still buggy

I bought this game at release based on the great review from Touch Arcade. The game is fun and I love the game does not force IAP or Facebook integration. I realize the developer has been working to fix the bugs but some things need to be addressed: - Game crashes on my iPhone 5 after I complete a run - The combos for matching the same items do not consistently work - The quests are not showing the progress they should, which may have to do with the game crashing - The bosses, especially by the third one, usually crush you no matter what - The bottom of the playing field gets cluttered with unmatchable items as you progress and besides the golden swords and the scramble item you might run across there is little way you can change the board. If the game automatically scrambles the board due to no matches present, it punishes you by knocking 25% of your heart life. I would like to see more ways to change the playing field. This is a 5 star game at heart when everything gets ironed out. Please support this developer and his business model or be prepared to see more freemium crap. I look forward to future updates.

Equipment bug.

Equipment says it changes stats but doesnt actually do anything. +7 vitality should give me a lot more hp and better shield but doesnt. Same when I wear an item that raises str +3, I still hit for the same amount with sword tiles. I dont think crit actually does anything. I got up to 15 agility and still never see a 1.5x or 2x attack. I did actually evade one attack completely (I was under the impression evasion didnt work either) Shield defense seems odd too like i get hit and have left over shield but still take damage, if this is part of evasion dont take away hp before the entire shield is depleted. Other than a lot of the numbers being messed up and other various small bugs the game is pretty fun. Bosses are hard but would be easier if equipment worked.

Bugs abound

Although a great game... It keeps crashing. Have to re-start game from earlier part of the level. Bosses are way to difficult and fights are badly balanced. You are practically punished for using some characters, which at present are useless. You should NOT have to deplete your stars to use an unlocked item. Its self-defeating when the game is do difficult and buggy.

Great Game - Constant Crashes.

Every time you end a run, the results screen crashes me. I lose no progress/starblocks, but its still a huge annoyance. Fix it and its a 5-star game.

Confusing

I play a ton of games (mobile and PC) and I couldnt figure this game out. The UI is really unclear. Things like gold and experience arent labelled. Purchasing items doesnt make sense. Just a mess. Too bad. Clearly a lot of time went into this and I think I would enjoy the game that was intended, but the developer doesnt understand the basics of what makes a game playable. If the UI and gameplay are made clearer Ill try it again and write a new review. Until then it goes in my "wish I hadnt purchased it" bin.

Fun, but feels unfinished

I really WANT this game to be great. It has all the hallmarks of something I would like: nice retro art, fun chiptune music, bright colors and lively sound design, a tongue-in cheek sense of humor, and endless rogue-like puzzle madness. But the game, in its current state, feels like a game still in development. There are a few crashes that cause you to lose progress. There are some glaring bugs with the way items work and damage is dealt and calculated. But most of all the game is just blatantly unbalanced. The stats are super ambiguous. Each character has a number of stars next to each stat which determines their strengths and weaknesses, and you can put points into stats as you level up. But theres very little explanation on how this works, and i find that any "strategies" I try to come up with have little actual effect. I can never seem to heal fast enough, shields are great, until you hit a boss, then theyre useless, and agility? What does it even really do? Enemies are numbingly repetitive and easy. The game claims that different enemies have different resistances, but its difficult to tell what those are. The different "areas" you visit have different enemies, but they all act the same and theres no feeling of variety or strategy or progress. Bosses are way overpowered. Want a long, protracted, edge of your seat boss battle? Too bad - by the second boss, you either kill him in a few hits because youve saved up an item or tons of attack blocks, or he kills you because HP and shields are NOTHING compared to boss attack power and frequency. This, coupled with enemies being so boringly easy, is very frustrating. Items need to show up more frequently, you should be able to hold more than one, and purchased stat boosts should be permanent. Raise 1 Int for the next 3 turns when all Im going to do fight is some dopey enemy and it may take me 3 turns to even find a cluster of magic blocks to use? Instant useless game mechanic. There should also be MORE items involving controlling and manipulating the board - I feel like these are the items that will change the way I play and give me a sense of accomplishment. The worst thing is, I feel like any and all of these issues would be glaringly apparent if the developer had engaged in ANY PLAYTESTING WHATSOEVER. This has all the elements if a really fun and successful game, but none of them fit together right. The game needs a math overhaul, based in some solid metrics on how people play it. You gotta hand it to him though, the dev is just one guy. He worked on Fieldrunners 1 & 2, but it looks like this is pretty much his first game, so I cant hate on it too much, but it seriously shouldnt have been publicly released for another few months. By the way LOVE THAT THERES NO IAP. Id love to be able to support the developer in some other way, but its so refreshing to see a real game out there that actually makes you PLAY the game to win! If you want a real strategy puzzle game, besides Puzzle Quest, check out DUNGEON RAID - totally boring and unassuming art and sound, but AMAZING gameplay with persistent unlocks, some great challenge, and tons Of items and skills that completely change the way you play.

Still buggy after update

Great improvement but I honestly the most obvious issue now is the mission objectives. Sometime they work and other times they dont. For example the buy 3 items or use 3 items, I was in the middle if a 100k+ point game and I bought probably 6 or 7 items and used about 8 and didnt get my starblock awarded. Its frustrating and really takes away from the game. Other than that its beautiful and fun game that is well worth the $2

Could be great, sadly not the case

This game has such potential, but its problems ruin it for me. Equipment doesnt do jack, boss fights after the second are next to impossible, and 80% of the time the game flat out crashes when my hero dies, yet sends me to some seemingly arbitrary save point when I relaunch. I feel robbed of $3 and am disappointed; thought this would be the next Ridiculous Fishing.

Fun, but...

The game itself is fun. The issues I am having is that as I defeat enemies, it crashes, and forces me to restart at the beginning, loosing all progress I have made up to that point. If it would stop crashing, I would probably rate it a 5, depending on what happens in the game beyond when it crashes. I agree with other reviewers that no IAP is great. I would also like more explanations of what things actually do, as some of them seem to do very little, if anything.

Buggy but great

A really fun game and good hybrid puzzle RPG with endless rogue like qualities. Just needs some polishing. A lot of items and abilities dont seem to work like they are supposed to. Once these issues are addressed I would definitely Ive a 5* rating!!

Fun, but crashes often at worst moment.

Crashes at the end of long runs while posting scores. Really kills the fun if you have that happen after youve been having fun and have just done a great, lucky run. Also, could use more methods to deal with a board you have ruined. On iPad Air.

Great game but the devil is in the details

Its definitely fun for burning time but gets old very quick. Also when you buy equipment you have to pay star blocks to equip.....every time you play! Ridiculous, makes the game lose replay value almost immediately and makes me think the developer either didnt think through the gameplay and test, or was just being greedy for iapp. Great game concept just poor execution on many fronts including bosses that usually decimate you when you blew through all the normal levels. Needs a lot of updates and improvements then could be an epic game because the concept was great, just failed to deliver in the end.
